The receiving function is very important to a facility’s financial health. Receiving is knowing what has been ordered, when it is expected to arrive and capturing the receipt to allow payment. It is also managing freight expenses, which is generally not well managed, and a large expense for a facility. This session will describe the concepts and importance of each.

The UDI ruling came about starting back when “To Err is Human” came out in 1999 indicating that as many as 98,000 people die in hospitals each year as a result of medical errors that could have been prevented. Healthcare needed a system to track these errors and to reduce the number of deaths. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was directed by then-President George H Bush to develop the UDI regulation. Meaningful Use states that all healthcare providers must submit the UDI to the patients' medical record beginning in January 2018. This session will describe the UDI and Meaningful Use and what is expected of each segment of healthcare.
